IN-DEPTH EXPERIENCES

The mountain massif of the Alps, which encloses the vast Po Valley in the north, pours from its white peaks extensive water masses that gather on a large plain into numerous watercourses. The most famous is Po, which gave the whole lowland its name. After several kilometers of flowing, the water rivers are stopped and absorbed by the Adriatic Sea, spilled into fan-shaped deltas..

They just “burst” from life. This is a place where many birds find shelter for rest or nesting, where there is an abundance of fish and where we humans have cut off fertile land for agriculture, too. Only few settlements are there, mostly inhabited by anglers and farmers who make a living from this wealth of life.

It is a completely different Italy, away from the hustle and bustle of big cities and shopping malls, where narrow paths lead past flooded fields. Passing by on an almost perfect plain we will enjoy melancholic views, peace and indescribable beauty through wetlands, oases or Mediterranean forests. A special “dessert” will be the encirclement of the timeless Venice by a cycling path on the lagoon surrounding islands.

DAY 1:

To Ravenna and the Sea Coast

Highlights:

  • Ravenna – a city of mosaics

The drive from Ljubljana to Ravenna will only take us a good 5 hours, so we will be in Ravenna early enough to enjoy a short sightseeing tour of this very special city, which reached its “big” moment during the disintegration of the Roman Empire, when Emperor Honorius transferred the capital there. Today, the city is famous for its many breathtaking mosaics, created in majority during the reign of Theodore the Great and under strong Byzantine influence. At the end of the day, we will cycle only few kilometers to the seaside resort Marina di Ravenna. Despite the short distance, our eyes will be delighted by the first natural beauties in the Pialassa della Baiona lagoon and the Duna Costiera nature reserve already.

The river Pad delta is a territory of which a good part is in so called “depression”, means that the water level in the fields is below sea level. This requires the construction of embankments and devices for pumping and regulating water levels. In the morning, we will first visit a dedicated museum to see and understand the functioning. In the more “continental” part of the Po delta, we will visit a few smaller towns, ilike Goro and Ca’ Tiepolo. The closer we will be getting to the sea, the less dry land there will be. We will drive along many embankments and enjoy the scenes of fishing huts and devices set up by anglers to make their catch easier.

We will arrive in Chioggia, a fishing town with many canals, so that it is called “little Venice”, early enough to have time for a trip to the seashore, where you can see the devices to protect precious Venice from frequent floods. They call them MOSE, however the reasons for the name you will find out on the spot.

This was the end of the first world war. The famous writer Ernest Hemingway was a volounteer of the First World War, too, and has been even wounded there. We will disembark in the village of Bibbione, a resort town with many sandy beaches, along which we will continue our journey to the town of Lignano Sabbiadoro, which we will avoid and continue our journey through the nature reserve of the river Stella to the fishing village of Marano lagunare, where we will spend the night..

    Legend of symbols

Mostly flat terrain, only shorter lower hills are possible
Slightly hilly terrain, ascents and descents are shorter and technically and fitness-wise undemanding
Hilly terrain, ascents and descents can be longer and steeper
Hilly terrain, ascents and descents can be very long and technically demanding
Mountainous terrain, very demanding ascents and descents on single tracks, tows or otherwise demanding trails that require a high level of fitness and technical skills

EASY: Relaxed cycling, suitable for beginners and families who want cycling experiences. There is a lot of time and opportunities on the way to stop and relax, and the terrain is undemanding in terms of altitude – mostly flat or with gentle slopes. The road surfaces are also undemanding – asphalt or well-paved and smooth gravel. As a rule, the lengths of daily sections do not exceed 35 kilometers.
MEDIUM EASY: Suitable for occasional cyclists – mostly undemanding cycling, but some days can also contain longer easy ascents or descents or shorter more demanding ascents or descents. The lengths of the daily sections are on average between 25 and 55 kilometers per day.
MEDIUM DEMANDING: Suitable for cyclists with an active lifestyle who cycle regularly. The cycling sections are longer and more demanding in terms of fitness. Medium-demanding terrain can also contain longer and steeper ascents and descents. The lengths of daily sections of mostly road-cycling tours are on average between 45 and 75 kilometers, and touring-cycling tours more than 30 kilometers.
DEMANDING: Suitable for very active and well-prepared cyclists who want more demanding cycling challenges. Medium to very demanding terrains can also contain longer and steeper ascents and descents. The lengths of daily road and cycling sections are on average between 65 and 85 kilometers, while touring cycling sections are correspondingly shorter, but at least more than 40 km.
VERY DIFFICULT: The most demanding cycling challenges. Suitable for excellent cyclists with high fitness level for longer cycling tours. These can be either typical road-cycling tours with daily sections longer than 85 kilometers or cycling tours on demanding terrains where the daily sections are shorter, but in any case longer than 50 kilometers and demanding both in height gain and surfaces.
