IN-DEPTH EXPERIENCES

Relaxed cycling will start at the railway station in Povir, from where we will descend in the direction of Podnanos, but soon branch off onto the hardened gravel along the bed of the Raša torrent. The playful stream Kranjšček, along whose waterfalls and pools we will climb on foot, descends from the slope of the so-called “Switzerland of the Kras” immediately at the beginning of the almost completely flat valley. At the end of the valley, we will turn in the direction of the village of Kobdilj and the pearl of Kras Štanjel to enjoy its beauty and attractions..

The region of Kras always offers an opportunity to get to know its indigenous local and extremely delicious cuisine, as well as excellent wines, so a visit to the vendors can always be an experience..

As the trip starts and ends at the railway station, it allows participants to use green, sustainable means of transport to the starting point of the route. Everyone who lives near the railway line between Ljubljana and Sežana will be able to get there by nature-friendly public transport, which for many is even free (!!)..

Tour description:

From the starting point at the Povir railway station, we will first cycle to the village of Štorje, where we will not look for the characters from the once very popular TV series, but to some interesting stone monoliths.

A descent follows by the asphalt road in the direction of Podnanos, but after crossing the bed of the Raša torrent, our path turns into an almost completely flat valley. Several streams flow into the torrent from the flysch slopes on its eastern outskirts, but the most interesting and picturesque is the Kranjšek stream, whose sparkling flow with numerous waterfalls and rapids was once successfully exploited by millers. We will go for a walk along the stream on foot.

After returning, we will drive past the villages of Mahniči and Nova vas to the asphalt road between Štanjel and Vipava and stay on it until the turnoff for Kobdilj. Here we will look for the pleasant scenic route of Maks Fabiani and climb up to Štanjel.

The pearl of the Karst, as it is called, offers many beauties and attractions, from traditional stone houses to a church, a castle, Ferrari’s garden, Gledanica hillfort, museums, an exhibition center and an excellent inn.

Therefore, we will stay in Štanjel until the arrival of the train that will take us from the railway station back to Sežana.

All those who find the route with no more than 23 kilometers not demanding enough, will be able to return to Povir (or Sežana) by bicycle.
